Tahir would finish with a score of 2/61 out of 10, but his success with the new ball gives the Proteas another option as the tournament progresses.
"It was a plan I had been working on for at least a year, playing bowling internationally with the new ball," Tahir told the media on Saturday, on the occasion of its 100th Proteas FDI when they face Bangladesh at The Oval on Sunday.
"I think we knew it was going to be a shock for everyone.
"It was a good challenge, a great challenge, to play against two of the world's best cricketers who were in shape.
"I was really pleased with the way I went out and I had a window for the team and that was our plan, which worked."
While Dale Steyn is officially out, the Proteas will again count on Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi to cause damage with the new ball on Sunday; something that they were unable to do against England.
The drummers of Bangladesh are well versed in the art of bowling, so it is unlikely that we would see Tahir playing in front of the Proteas Rapids this time around.
This does not mean, however, that he will no longer receive the new ball at another stage of the tournament.
"Whenever I get an opportunity like this, I will not be the guy who will say no to my captain," Tahir said.
