VANCOUVER ISLAND, BC – Ecoideas Innovations Inc. recalls two Apricot branded products.
According to an announcement by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Bitter Raw brand Bitter Raw apricot seeds and apricot seed meal are being recalled due to the presence of the natural toxin Amygdalin.
Amygdalin is detoxified in the human body if ingested in small amounts, but can cause cyanide poisoning if taken in large amounts.
According to the CFIA, information on the dosage of the recalled products may result in excessive consumption, which may lead to acute cyanide intoxication.
Bitter Raw apricot seeds are available in 454 g and 226 g packages. Those with lot code EXP 0121 are part of the recall. The apricot flour in the package of 191.4 g bearing the code 0218WF of March 2020 is recalled.
The agency added in its announcement that those who own the products should discard them or return them to where they bought them.
The symptoms of acute cyanide intoxication are: headache, dizziness, confusion, weakness, breathing difficulties, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, convulsions and coma.
The recall was triggered by Ecoideas Innovation Inc., and the CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may result in the recall of other products.
According to the agency, it has been reported no cases of consumption of products by consumers.
