Two cases of influenza A causing deaths in Australia and New Zealand have been reported in the Cook Islands.
This was confirmed by Dr. Yin Yin May, Director of Hospital Health Services of the Ministry of Health.
Dr. May said that up to now 12 cases have been identified. These cases were tested in mid-May and samples were sent to New Zealand for confirmation.
She said the results revealed that there were two cases of influenza A and four cases of influenza B so far.
She said the first case of influenza A diagnosed was a visitor from New Zealand.
In Australia, influenza A has had a significant impact this year, killing around 35 people.
In New Zealand, two people died of the flu one month after the start of the influenza season, according to Stuff.
Dr. May stated that they would send other samples to test if more cases were identified.
She explained that when the flu virus was identified, they had to make sure to differentiate between the flu virus and the dengue virus. Therefore, the tests are sent to New Zealand.
Dr. May explained that preliminary tests were also performed at the Rarotonga hospital. Symptoms include fever, elevated temperature of about 38 degrees, cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, body aches, headache, vomiting, and stomach upset.
The incubation period is from one to four days and the symptoms begin to manifest themselves especially continuously.
Dr. May stated that it was a normal flu, but that people at high risk and likely to have complications such as death are pregnant women, mothers who come to have a baby, people with recurring medical problems such as chronic asthma, diabetes and obese people, and those who are over 65 years old.
She said that influenza A is worse than virus B and that the best way to avoid it is to follow the rules of hygiene.
She said that in 2017, flu shots were introduced for medical staff and that they were subsidized.
This year, Dr. May said under the new Secretary of Health, flu shots are provided to all health personnel to prevent them from getting infected or to pbad them on to the public.
