The city of Paris will ban smoking in 52 parks and gardens in the French capital. The ban, which will come into effect on June 8, was announced on Friday on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.

The Paris City Hall has developed six parks and gardens without smoking areas in July 2018 and the latest announcement provides for the ban to 46 others.

The measure aims to "reduce the number of smokers in these parks and butts thrown to the ground," explained the directive issued by the city authorities.

While the number of smokers is falling here, France still ranks among the countries that smoke the most among smokers in the European Union and the new initiative to increase public health standards will be phased in.

During the first weeks of "outreach", information panels and ashtrays will be installed at the main entrances of the 52 selected gardens.

But once this phase is over, in early July, offenders will be fined 38 euros for illumination.

It is already forbidden to smoke in the 500 playgrounds of Paris parks since 2015.

Last February, the mayor of Paris voted to create a street "no cigarette" in each of its districts.
