A COUPLE is open on the sorrow of having lost four of their five babies shortly after birth.

Sarah, Dean Mumm's daughter Sophie, her son Henry and the twins Ella and Grace have unfortunately not survived because of complications after their untimely birth.

The former 35-year-old Rugby Union player and his wife, a 34-year-old lawyer, had suffered so much that Alfie, who had arrived in good health at 36 weeks, had not bought article for baby.

"We lived week after week, go by appointment and we could not accept that it was real until he came home with us," Dean told Femail.

They first discovered that they were pregnant with their daughter Sophie in 2012, five months after their marriage.

However, one week after their 20-week scan, Sarah started bleeding and the doctors told her that she was dilated to 3 cm and that the amniotic sac was damaged, which is a sign of childbirth premature.

Sarah gave birth and the "beautiful" Sophie was "too small to survive" and died shortly after birth.

Then she was diagnosed with "cervical weakness" – when the cervix is ​​unable to remain pregnant, causing miscarriage or premature delivery.

A year and a half later, the couple was delighted to discover that they were waiting again.

Sarah had a cervical strapping – also called a cervical stitch – to help ensure a healthy pregnancy.

However, at 28 weeks she had placental hemorrhage and was taken to hospital where doctors tried unsuccessfully to stop the premature birth of their son Henry.

The holding was "bittersweet" as he was quickly taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for close supervision.

But the little boy contracted an infection and was not strong enough to fight it. He died nine days later in his mother's arms.

When Sarah learned that she was pregnant for the third time, she pbaded exams every two weeks to check that the cervix did not shorten.

In the period leading up to the birth of their son Alfie, now three years old, she had anxiety attacks due to "concern that this may not happen".

But he was born at 36 weeks, and after 24 hours at the NICU and another five days in special care, he was able to go home.

Two years later, Sarah discovered that she was pregnant with two identical twins, Ella and Grace.

But they were born 20 weeks after the onset of twin-twin syndrome – there is an imbalance in blood flow between each twin, which can lead to heart failure and other serious complications.

"The work was particularly difficult because we almost lost Sarah as well." Grace survived for 25 minutes and spent her whole life in her arms, while Ella died during delivery, Dean said. .

Sarah added, "It's traumatic suffering to suffer the job, knowing that your child will not be alive at the end, knowing that once the job is done, there will be no cry of life, silence. "

The couple says that, while loving Alfie's parents, they think about their four other children daily.
