Cancer of the intestine has long been badociated with the elderly, but a new study has shown an alarming increase in rates in the under 50s.
The shock results prompted health experts to call young Australians to begin screening for this deadly disease.
One in ten intestinal cancer is now detected in people under 50 and 103 Australians die every year, making it the second most deadly cancer in Australia.
Julien Wiggins, CEO of Bowel Cancer Australia, said Sunrise that the increase is probably related to diet and lifestyle.
"There has been an increase in the number of young people diagnosed, compared to the over-50s where rates were either going down or staying the same," he said.
"Research indicates that this could be related to being overweight, eating red meat, alcohol, smoking, lack of exercise or lack of dietary fiber."
Wiggins encourages all people with concerns or symptoms to consult their GP as soon as possible.
