Dr. Sam Jona encourages graduates to enter the agri-food sector

Cape Coast, June 2, GNA – Dr. (Sir) Sam Esson
Jonah, Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), challenged
graduates to exploit the rich agricultural resources of the country and the company
agribusiness to solve the unemployment problem and maintain national foodstuffs
Security.

He explained that the sector has tremendously
opportunities that have remained unexploited and need to be carefully examined with
innovation, investments and dynamic pragmatic approaches to transforming society.

He observed that this remained the key to employment
the creation and supply of adequate and reliable raw materials necessary for
the economic emancipation envisaged by industrialization.

Dr. Jonah was speaking at the 17th session
of the 51st congregation convened for graduates of the School of Graduate
Studies at the UCC Friday.

A total of 1,183 students including 495
Large schools formed through the distance higher education mode of the university
in six regional centers located in Tamale, Sunyani, Kumasi, Accra,
Takoradi and Cape Coast have graduated.

"I would like to recommend you
Consider the agricultural sector as you think you are settling down. It is
we, Ghanaians, have not been able to invest on a full scale, "said Dr.
Jonah said.

The Chancellor has instructed the new graduates of
erase the notion and misconceptions that portray agriculture as the sole reserve
for the uneducated and venture into it instead.

He again challenged the graduates to equip
themselves with new technological trends and strengthen their ability to
develop, organize and manage their own businesses and create jobs
to others.

Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, vice
Chancellor, reiterated the commitment of the university to provide the resources
good academic atmosphere conducive to effectively improving the teaching and
learning.

The University would also strengthen it
the supervisory role of its 13 affiliated institutions, as it opens the door at once
local and international sister
collaborative institutions and advanced scholarships.

He congratulated the graduates for their
self-discipline and determination to pursue their academic dreams regardless of
the enormous challenges and obstacles.

The Vice Chancellor urged them to always
present the excellent traits that the University has instilled in them to obtain
at the zenith of their career.

"Now is the time to recalculate, rethink
and find new territories and break ground. Note that your greatest legacy is
not financial benefits although they are good but your greatest legacy is every
the life you touch, "advised Professor Ampiah to the graduates.
