A new article in CRANIO Journal explains how the ganglion of sphenopalatine is a common thread linking these disorders. Self-administration of SPG blocks and neuromodulation on the ganglion can dramatically improve the quality of life of patients.

CHICAGO, June 3, 2019 / PRNewswire / – A new article in May 2019 CRANIO Journal examines the effects of the autonomic nervous system on a wide variety of chronic head and neck pain. Dr. Ira Shapira initially wrote a master's thesis for the International College Craniomandibular Orthopedics (ICCMO).

Dr. Shapira is a Chicago Dentist from the region who treats chronic headaches, migraine and joint pains. He is the leading advocate for the use of self-administered SPG blocks in dentistry and medicine. He has lectured at the national and Argentina and in May 2019 in Moscow about this topic.

SPG blocks have been in use for more than 100 years, but they were disappearing as a forgotten medicine. In 1986, a book entitled "Miracles on Park Avenue" drew attention to this amazing procedure. An article, "Phenomena of Sphenopalatine" by Hiram Byrd Physicians in 1930, Annals of Internal Medicine (JAMA), reported 10,000 successful SPG blocks in 2,000 patients with virtually no side effects.

Recent developments in new medical devices for the delivery of SPG blocks have been made popular by emergency physicians in cases of severe headaches and by neurologists. They also made the procedure very expensive, costing $ 1200$ 3,500 by block. The best results are obtained by repetitive blocks over a series of weeks. They are used to prophylactically reduce future headaches, migraines and cluster headaches.

Dr. Shapira taught health professionals how to use cotton-end nasal catheters to administer blocks. More importantly, it teaches patients how to self-administer these blocks. After a first patient visit, the cost of self-administration is less than $ 1.00 and uses only 2% lidocaine. Self-administration means that a patient can also avoid expensive visits to emergency rooms or doctors' offices and eliminate much of the time spent suffering. SPG blocks often provide relief in minutes. Dr. Shapira believes this is especially important for treating fibromyalgia-related pain.

The use of neuromodulation of the autonomic nervous system and GSP is a new development of medicine, but it has been used safely and effectively by neuromuscular dentists for over 50 years. Dr. Barney Jankelson created the Myomonitor, a ULF-TENS that stimulates the trigeminal nerve. The ganglion Sphenopalatiine is located on the maxillary branch of the trigeminal nerve.

Dr. Shapira has created a dedicated website about Sphenopalatine Gang Blocks: https://www.sphenopalatineganglionblocks.com/ and has a dedicated Reddit account on SPG Blocks. https://www.reddit.com/r/SPGBlocks/

Dr. Shapira has over 150 videos of patients on the treatment of TMJ disorders, SPG blocks and sleep apnea:

The use of self-administered SPG blocks produces a major change in conditions that can be treated with SPG blocks, including:
Anxiety
fibromyalgia
Trigeminal neuralgia
Cluster headaches
TDG
Migraine
Autonomic Trigeminal Headache
Recent studies show that they eliminate 1/3 of the essential hypertension

He has a general dentistry practice at Gurnee, IL which provides both family dental care, implants, reconstruction and cosmetic dentistry. www.DelanyDentalCare.com

He was an Assistant Professor at Rush Medical School and worked at the Sleep Disorders Center with Dr. Rosalind Cartwright. He has been using oral appliances and dental sleeping pills for nearly 40 years to treat sleep apnea and snoring with oral appliances for patients who do not want or can not tolerate CPAP.

Dr. Shapira is the Editor-in-Chief of CRANIO Journal's Cranio-facial Pain Section.

He was a founding member of the Sleep Disorder Dental Society, which became the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADMS). He is a diplomat of the AADSM, diplomat of the ASBA, the American Sleep and Breathing Association, diplomat of the American Academy of Integrative Pain Management and is also a member and master of the ICCMO.
