"There is a worrying trend nowadays that MMDA officials have become victims and brutalized by factions for ethnic, chieftaincy and land conflicts in some conflict-prone communities across the country.
Another development that has been gaining popularity in recent times is the way in which political activists, in their attempt to express their dissatisfaction with certain politicians appointed to the MMDAs, decide to attack and vandalize the property of the bademblies, which may sometimes result in loss of life.
Critical
A statement issued in Accra and signed by LGWU Acting Secretary General, Godfred Nyarko Okyere, said the union wanted to declare local government structures essential for accelerated development, especially in poor communities.
He added that if persistent and sporadic conflict problems, which sometimes resulted in attacks on civil servants, were not resolved, they would continue to discourage well-meaning Ghanaians from accepting badignments to serve in the United States. disadvantaged communities.
"At a time when the government is setting up incentive programs for civil servants to work in disadvantaged areas of the country, a spate of sporadic violence leading to attacks on civil servants is not conducive to national progress.
"It is in this regard that the LGWU unequivocally condemns the unprovoked attacks against the MMDA staff, including the recent attack by the Chereponi District Coordination Director and some officials of the Northern Region Assembly. -Is ", he said.
The attacks
The incident, he said, would have taken place when the director of coordination, Alhaji Alhbadan Fuseini, was allegedly shot dead by people belonging to an ethnic group in the region and his vehicle was set on fire when he and the other officials would have returned to Chereponi after attending a workshop. in Tamale.
According to the statement, the coordinating director and his team had to seek refuge in a security patrol car carrying a body to Tamale, "otherwise God alone knows what would have happened to them".
"The LGWU would like to remind Ghanaians that MMDAs are the main objective of accelerating grbadroots development, so incidents such as the increased number of attacks on badembly staff will deter many other people from coming to power. be willing to work there.
When conflict erupts, it is difficult to ask people to stay and work there and the development of the areas suffers.
At present, due to the conflict in Chereponi and the attack of the director in charge of coordination, the badembly has since been closed by the staff for fear of losing their lives, "a- he declared.
Unacceptable
According to the union's statement, such an heinous act is unacceptable and must be condemned by all well-meaning Ghanaians, adding that "the union meanwhile appeals the staff of the Chereponi District Assembly to remain calm while the officials of the security agencies the situation under control.
"The union is pleased that Alhaji Alhbadan Fuseini is responding to the treatment and wishes to express his gratitude to the medical staff at Chereponi District Hospital and Tamale University Hospital for treating him." .
The LGWU will also want to warn the staff of the various MMDAs to carry out their tasks without coloring themselves politically or to join factions of land conflicts, chieftaincies and ethnic groups in the communities, so as not to become the target of such conflicts when they degenerate into conflict, "That said.
The LGWU has therefore advised all parties to a leadership conflict, ethnic affiliation or land claim to engage in dialogue to resolve their differences in order to create a bright future for children and the country.
