The body that oversees the elections in Algeria said that it was not possible to hold presidential elections as scheduled on July 4th.
A statement from the Constitutional Council stated that it was incumbent on the president to name a new date for the vote.
Algeria has seen months of anti-government protests.
Longtime President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned in April, but protesters are pleading for greater change in the country's ruling elite.
Abdelkader Bensalah has replaced him in the interim presidency, but many consider him too close to the former leader.
Mr. Bouteflika himself was widely perceived as a front for a group of businessmen, politicians and military officials supposed to hold real power in the country.
In its statement, read on state television, the constitutional council cited the lack of candidates to justify the abolition of the planned vote.
Only two people had registered and the protesters had requested the cancellation of it, fearing that this would only prolong the current administration.
Protesters were again in the streets of the capital, Algiers, calling Friday for the resignation of President Bensalah and the Prime Minister.
