The Electoral Commission (EC) has postponed indefinitely the next limited voter registration exercise across the country.
In a press release issued Monday, the commission said the action had become necessary given the pending injunction to prevent it from not holding the exercise. 39, limited voter registration ".
The EC had scheduled the exercise to register people who had turned 18 since the last update of the voter register.
The three-week exercise was scheduled to take place from June 7 to 27, but the Electoral Commission apologized for any inconvenience, noting that a new date would be announced soon.
Umar Ayuba filed an application in the Supreme Court to obtain an injunction to prevent the Commission from proceeding to the registration last week.
The injunction follows an action brought by the same individual to challenge the EC's decision to retain registration in its district offices and in certain electoral zones.
According to Mr Ayuba, the Commission's directive has no legal basis, which renders it unconstitutional.
EC calendar recording is scheduled to begin on June 7, ahead of the local elections and referendum scheduled for next December.
Sylvia Annor, the EC's communications officer, told Joy News on Monday that she had no choice but to abide by the court's orders.
"The Commission is still waiting for the final decision on the court's request for an injunction on this issue," she said.
Regarding the decision affecting the EC calendar, Ms Annor said that she should make adjustments, but it is not yet ripe to decide on this.
"Let's wait for the request for an injunction," she said.
