A little over a year ago, the Aptiv autonomous software vendor and Lyft has launched a pilot project to test a robotaxi service in Las Vegas during the week of CES, with drivers of human safety always driving.
This one week pilot project never ended. And now, companies claim to have made more than 50,000 trips in standard BMW 5 vehicles equipped with Aptiv technology via the Lyft app. The driving average received a rating of 4.97 out of 5 stars, according to Lyft, which adds that 92% of cyclists said felt very safe or extremely safe during the ride.
This milestone illustrates how much Aptiv and Lyft have grown in 18 months. It also shows that, despite the considerable number of trips made, there is still a long way to go before humans leave the driver's seat for good.
Lyft and Aptiv launched the pilot for the first time in January 2018. In August, they had exceeded 5,000 laps in autonomous driving. Aptiv's investment in Las Vegas has increased as the number of pbadengers has increased. The company has opened a 130,000-square-foot technical center in the city to host its fleet of autonomous vehicles as well as a team of engineers dedicated to research and development of software and hardware systems, validation and to cartography.
However, this is not yet a pure robotaxi affair. Autonomous vehicles always have driver safety drivers. And the rides are for the most part, but not completely, made in autonomous mode. Cars must be in manual mode in the car parks and hotel pick-up areas, according to Lyft.
The Lyft-Aptiv program will continue indefinitely, according to Lyft. It could even grow. The delegation said it planned to "work together to continue to bring self-driving technology to new cities and new pbadengers".
