Otuke. On Thursday, Otuke magistrate was left speechless when a suspect appeared in court with his stolen clothes.

The magistrate was forced to postpone the hearing of all cases for a week to recover from the shock, said a police officer who had attended the spectacular court session.

He is the same man as first-year judge, Mr. Benjamin Seruru, released on May 24 after being remanded in the Otuke government prison for stealing a sack of simsim, a he added.

Jimmy Oteng, 34, residing in the village of Okelo-amone, Adwari sub-county in Otke district, had been in remand in Otuke Prison for six months . He was accused of stealing a sack of simsim in the home of Mr. David Okello, a resident of Okelo-amone village. Oteng allegedly broke into Mr. Okello's home in November 2018.

However, Mr. Seruru of 24 May decided to release him because the applicant had repeatedly failed to appear in court to testify against the suspect.

Just one day after his release from prison, Oteng reportedly searched the magistrate's home and stole his property. He stole a suitcase containing four suits and other clothes, two jerrycans of 20-liter water, which he confused with cooking oil, among others.
He was arrested on Wednesday.

A police officer attached to Otuke Central Police Station, who requested anonymity, told Daily Monitor on Friday that Oteng had also raided the homes of two prison officers.

The victims include Mr. Longman Ogwang and Ms. Jennet Alum. The police officer stated that Oteng allegedly stole cooking oil and other household items during a search of the prison staff's home. He then broke into the magistrate's house.

Oteng would have taken advantage of the heavy rain because the occupants of these houses had left for work.

"He was found hidden in a bush in the Bar-odugu district, in Otuke City Council, by two hunters who called me and I went to arrest him. I found him in possession of several items stolen from the magistrate's house, including four pairs of suits, "the police source said.

He added that Oteng appeared in court on Thursday before Seruru refused to hear the case and placed the suspect on remand until 11 June. He will appear again in the Lira Trial Court or Justice of the Peace Alebtong.

The Otuke District Police Commander, Mr. Edison Birema Turyamyamwe, said Friday that the suspect was a usual criminal, who had previously been charged with several theft and burglary cases.

Mr. Mike Okullo, one of the hunters, said over the weekend that it had been raining a lot the night before and that by mid-day it was still raining. So, they decided to go into the bush to hunt squirrels and real rats when they came across Oteng in the bush.
