Kylian Mbappe could have signed for Liverpool in 2017.
But the French international has instead chosen to join Paris Saint-Germain, lent by Monaco for a season, before the transfer becomes permanent for a total of 167 million pounds.
Mbappe has made steady progress in Paris, where he has twice won the league, the Coupe de France, the Coupe de la Ligue and the Super Cup of France.
The 20-year-old has also won the World Cup with France this summer, which has only boosted his profile and attracted the attention of all major clubs on the planet.
PSG will be confident to keep the young player but he has failed in the Champions League these last two seasons, which could play against him.
Liverpool is a team that has excelled in Europe over the past two years. The Reds have reached the final twice and won the competition this season.
But Mbappe refused the chance to sign for the Reds in 2017, according to The Telegraph.
The newspaper reports that Anfield's club has failed to convince Mbappe that a move to Liverpool would be the best step of his career. He therefore accepted the terms of the contract with PSG.
Mbappe spoke of his future after winning the Ligue 1 Player of the Year title this season, and suggested he consider moving.
"It's a very important moment for me, I may be at the first or the second turning point of my career," said the Frenchman.
"I've learned so much here and I think the time may have come to have more responsibilities.Maybe that at PSG, it would make me very happy, or maybe somewhere else for a new project "
