When Apple launched iTunes for Windows nearly 14 years ago, Steve Jobs said that it was probably the best-written Windows application to date. Over the years, however, it became clear that the description was no longer correct, both on Mac and Windows. During the presentation of MacOS 10:15, Catalina Craig Federighi personally joked about the eventual future growth of the program. At first, you were "completely focused", so focused on the main task: fast organization of the music library, fast search, easy synchronization, comfortable CD burning. "Rip, Mix, Burn" was the chosen slogan once. Incidentally, the News icon displays the iTunes logo of the year 2003.
That came a lot – but why not all apps in iTunes?
After managing music, the iTunes Music Store came with the purchase of music, podcasts, movies, in addition to the synchronization between iPod and iPhone, the App Store … but iTunes could not do more? For the entertainment of the spectators, Federighi Kalender counted (all the appointments and even the best songs in one application!), Mail and Safari. How to switch between these areas? Of course, iTunes still has its own dock! "No, I think our team had a better idea," Federighi said. A huge application turns into several specialized applications, while iTunes is the story.
No single application for Windows
With iTunes-out on the Mac, but now creates a strange situation. The old Apple software character is no longer available for Mac, but only for Windows. It remains there with the vast multifunctional software suite, which must manage music from different podcasts and movies of different types of media. A breakdown, as in macOS 10.15 Catalina, there is none.
"First and foremost," nothing changes
For Windows users, in the double sense, nothing changes: iTunes remains intact, but only in its current form and without further development. Apple's long-term projects are unknown. Certainly, Apple has interest in rendering services such as Apple Music and podcasts available on Windows, so that the platform will certainly not be left. However, special applications like the one on Mac do not seem to be at hand in the foreseeable future. Apple itself commented on a consultation with the brief review: iTunes for Windows "first" continue in the current form.
