What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fir follows Ramadan, the Islamic holy month, which sees Muslims fast fast during daylight hours.

Ramadan commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad and is considered one of the five pillars of Islam.

Ramadan lasts between 29 and 30 days, depending on when a new moon is sighted by local religious authorities.

And Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the period of reflection and solemn revaluation of Ramadan.

The observation of the new moon means that Eid al-Fitr can begin.

Precisely when Muslims choose to observe it, it varies because there is little agreement within Islam to know if the Moon should be seen at the eye naked and if it should be seen in the country where the celebrations take place.

The date of Eid al-Fitr depends on the lunar calendar, which is why it falls annually on a date different from the Gregorian calendar.

This year, Eid al-Fitr takes place from Tuesday, June 4 in the evening until Wednesday, June 5 in the evening.
