If you have already browsed Craigslist or eBay looking for an iPhone, you probably already have the habit of seeing ads for new iPhones unlocked by mystery dealers. You may see less for the moment: London detectives have arrested nine members of an international group of iPhone resellers.
The suspects in question would have taken advantage of extremely subsidized rates for the iPhone in the United Kingdom to buy thousands of new handsets through an intermediary with a credit card or a fraudulent identity. They would then sell these iPhones internationally for a substantial profit, by sticking the local British spokespersons with their iPhone.
That's not all: the same criminals stole more than £ 1.2 million from the mobile operator O2 by connecting SIM cards to dialers to call premium phone lines under their control, at the price 10 pounds a minute. They then simply abandoned the contracts, disappearing without a trace.
It was this last crime that actually triggered the monthly detective survey of the City of London, which eventually brought them nine collars. In one house, they also confiscated more than £ 15,000 of iPhones still in their boxes.
