Uber Copter will offer helicopter rides in New York in July

Uber Technologies Inc. is testing a helicopter service in New York, according to documents describing the program obtained by Bloomberg.

The documents will state that pbadengers will be able to use the Uber app to book a flight via the service called Uber Copter. The test flights took off from the helipad of Manhattan, near Wall Street, to John F. Kennedy International Airport.

After Bloomberg asked Uber to comment on Wednesday, the New York Times published an article about the program. It states that customers will be able to book flights from July 9 in New York and that the average trip will cost between $ 200 and $ 225 per person. Eric Allison, head of Uber's flight operations, told the Times that the company plans to eventually offer helicopter rides to other cities. A spokesman for Uber declined to comment.

Helicopters have been transporting travelers from Manhattan to the nearest airports for decades. Now, a startup called Blade Urban Air Mobility Inc. even allows customers to book using an app. It currently offers regular flights from Manhattan to three airports six days a week for only $ 195. "Blade's strategy may not be more validated than Uber's on the urban air mobility market in New York," said Blade CEO Rob Wiesenthal.

While Uber was gearing up last month for the biggest US public offering since 2014, the company has focused on its investments in different modes of transportation. In addition to the largest car transport service in the world, it operates autonomous vehicles, electric bikes, scooters and now helicopters. Next week, Uber will hold a conference on urban air transport in Washington.

When Uber Copter arrives next month, it will only be available to members of the company's loyalty program who will qualify for the top two levels, Platinum and Diamond, said one familiar with the packages. The rides can be booked on demand or up to five days in advance, said the person, who asked not to be identified. Each helicopter can accommodate five pbadengers and, as with Uber car trips, prices will fluctuate depending on demand and other factors.

Uber flight test documents show that the group carried two groups of pbadengers on April 11th. The rides, from Manhattan to JFK and back, took five pbadengers each way. The documents list the names of Uber employees on the manifest. According to documents, pbadengers must be greeted by "Hello, welcome to Uber Copter".
