Canada Details Plans for 5G Internet Deployment

Canada announced Wednesday that it was preparing for the arrival of ultra-fast 5G Internet service as it outlined its plans to make more 5G spectrum available from next year.

The Federal Ministry of Innovation has issued a document outlining the changes to be made to an auction scheduled for next year, a decision on a higher frequency millimeter wave spectrum in 2021 and a proposal new frequency in 2022.

"The next steps in our plan will continue to improve Internet access in rural areas and enable the timely deployment of 5G connectivity while increasing the level of competition for lowering the prices of Canadians," said the Minister. Innovation, Navdeep Bains, in a statement.

The government estimates that 5G wireless technologies could represent a $ 40 billion ($ 29.8 billion) industry in Canada by 2026. It is investing $ 199 million over five years to modernize spectrum equipment. .

Canada has not yet announced whether or not to use the 5G equipment provided by the Chinese company Huawei Technologies Co Ltd.

The United States accused Huawei of being tied to the Chinese government and effectively banned US companies from doing business with it for reasons of national security.
