The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the number of measles cases in the United States exceeded 1,000 in 2019 and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) began to urge citizens to be vaccinated in order to quell the worst measles outbreak in more than 25 years, Trend reported quoting Sputnik.
"The thousandth case of a preventable disease like measles is a disturbing reminder of the importance of this work for the public health of the nation," said HHS secretary Alex Azar in a statement released Wednesday. "We can not say enough: vaccines are essential a safe and highly effective public health tool to prevent this disease and end the current epidemic".
In response to the outbreak, CDC has developed a toolkit containing resources to increase public awareness and resolve vaccine-related safety issues related to misinformation.
CDC director Robert Redfield urged all citizens who can be vaccinated to do so last month, saying the dangers of measles are more important than the perceived risks of the vaccine.
The CDC has deployed a project officer from the Immunization Program in Albany, New York State, where the majority of cases originate from the current outbreak.
The measles outbreak in the state of New York has seen a steady increase over the past seven months, according to the CDC.
The agency predicts that if the current trend continues into the fall, the United States may lose the measles elimination status it received in 2000.
