From 2020, British travelers to Australia should be able to choose a radically different place of call: Chicago.
Qantas has announced its intention to announce a new link between Illinois and Brisbane as soon as the final approval of a joint venture with American Airlines (AA).
The Australian airline will also announce a link between San Francisco and the Queensland capital. But though there are many nonstop flights between California and Australia, there are not so far from Chicago.

Brisbane was chosen as the gateway because, more importantly, it is 335 km from Chicago closer to Sydney than Sydney – the main hub of Qantas in Australia.
The flight distance between Chicago and Brisbane is 13,000 km, compared to the 9,009 km non-stop flight from Heathrow to Perth that Qantas launched in 2018.

But the additional 40 minutes of flight to Sydney would add pressure to the trip and make a refueling stopover in Fiji.

The direct route from Chicago to Brisbane begins with a flight due west, then follows to the south and crosses the west coast halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The vast majority of 17 hours of flight fly over the Pacific, south of Hawaii and over New Caledonia.
One day will be lost by crossing the international timestamp line from east to west. But on return, the pbadengers can pick it up – with an arrival in Chicago at about the same time and the same date as their departure from Brisbane.
In the event that Qantas-AA is approved, the US carrier will likely offer good connections and good fares from Heathrow via Chicago.
However, in North Queensland, Cathay Pacific cuts its flights between Hong Kong and travelers' favorite, Cairns – a city offering diving courses and trips to the Great Barrier Reef.

After 26 years as the leading foreign airline serving Cairns, the airline said the route was no longer profitable and that it would terminate its route by the end of October.
However, according to the Routes Online website earlier this year, Thomas Cook Airlines could launch a new link between Gatwick and Cairns in January 2020 via Goa in India.
Thomas Cook is currently studying offers for his airline and schedules for 2020 are not confirmed.
