The Lions Club of Ghana organized a free screening exercise for Muslims in Accra as part of activities organized to mark the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The exercise took place after yesterday's prayer and the service of grace on the place of the black star, where Muslims gathered for the climax of Ramadan.
This allowed them to check their HIV status and to screen for hepatitis B, blood pressure, sugar levels and other health problems.
The organizers said they had targeted at least 350 people to benefit from the exercise, but the first signs of mbadive clientelism helped to surpbad the target.
Recognition
Some of the people who came to attend the screening exercise expressed their joy and said they were generally very busy, which still kept them from being examined regularly.
Others have also stated that, although they are willing to take medical exams, financial difficulties have proved to be an obstacle, as they could not afford the cost of such medical tests.
One of the celebrants of the Eid-ul-Fitr on the Independence Square and beneficiary of the free screening exercise, which is now called Musah, said: "It's been a long time since I went to check.
My work has taken up all my time and I do not even have enough time for my health. I am very grateful to the organizers of this exercise. "
Mr. Smaila Adnan, another recipient, also said, "Sometimes I want to be able to have regular checkups, but I am not financially stable.
I am happy to receive this screening for free. That Allah bless the organizers of this exercise because, through them, many of us who can not afford it will get it for free.
Reason for the exercise
The president of the club, Sheilla Gyamfi-Yeboah, said they had committed in the past four years to ensure the health of the country's inhabitants.
She added that many people in the country were not regularly screened, which predisposed them to preventable diseases.
Ms. Gyamfi-Yeboah stated that, for this reason, the club was committed to engaging in such activities to educate people about their health.
She added that after the screening, they would refer anyone presenting a health risk to the concerned health professionals, adding that "when we realize that the condition is very critical, we will will return to the hospital for the necessary treatment.
Other activities
Ms. Gyamfi-Yeboah further revealed that the club has many activities in preparation to help vulnerable people in society.
"Lionism is above all for the benefit of the disadvantaged of society. So we will ensure that these people benefit from us in all our businesses, "she said.
"We have already launched many projects and we will continue to do more," she added.
