A 40-year-old man arrested by police in Asikuma, central region, for alleged possession of wee, died in police custody, forcing residents to besiege the police station in Asikuma.

Kweku Botwe was one of two other people – Kwesi Ennin, 33, and Abotsu Omaru, 18 – arrested Wednesday night in a coconut grove with quantities of dried leaves suspected of being narcotics.

A pair of scissors, two matchboxes and 64 cedis were also found at the place where the suspects were arrested. Police said the neighborhood, which is located on Mbra Street of Asikuma, is a den for smokers and other criminals.

According to the police, Botwe, also known as Kwabena Beka, "complained of vertigo during his detention at the police station in Asikuma" at night and was therefore taken to the police station. Asikuma Hospital where he later died while he was being treated.

His death, according to the police, sparked unrest among residents who stormed the Asikuma police station on Thursday to demand the release of the other two suspects currently in custody.

"They threw stones and broke a windowpane at the Asikuma police station. But they have been scattered, "said a police report spotted by 3news.com.

Reinforcements were requested from Mankessim, Ajumako and the regional headquarters to bring the situation under control.

"The region is now calmed down," the police report said.

In the meantime, the police announced that the body of the deceased had been dropped off at the morgue of Asikuma hospital waiting for autopsy.

DSP Irene Oppong, a member of the PRO's Central Regional Police (PRO), said the case would be investigated to determine the cause of the suspect's death. She therefore urged the resident to protect himself from any act of violence.

"The Regional Police Command wants to badure the general public that all investigations will be conducted to determine the cause of death, which will be conducted by a hospital expert.

"They should not do themselves justice, they should make sure not to destroy property in any place, including the police station … wait until we find the cause of death after the" autopsy of the body, she called.

In the meantime, she expressed the condolences of the police command to the family of the deceased.
