Mobile phone company Uber has denied reports that one of its drivers was detained as a suspect in connection with the kidnapping of two Canadian nationals in Kumasi.

Kumasi police arrested a Uber driver on Thursday while she was watching the kidnappers of two 19- and 20-year-old Canadian women who were abducted on Tuesday.

Reacting to the development, Uber said the driver was only helping investigations but was not an accomplice.

"The police confirmed to us that our driver is not treated like a suspect," said Friday to Accra Francesca Uriri, head of communications at Uber West Africa.

The unidentified band reportedly arrested and reunited the two men – Bailen Chitty, 19, and Lauren Patricia Catherine, 20 – at gunpoint, around 8:30. at Ahodwo, Royal Gulf of Kumasi Club at 4:25 am on June 4th.

According to the police, investigations to find and rescue the girls started immediately as soon as the information was communicated to them.
