Sam's Club improves the tire shop with a time-saving application – TechCrunch

At today's news that Walmart will soon launch home grocery delivery in some markets, the company announced today a new effort also to save time for its customers. But this time, the focus was on the Sam's Club members and specifically dealt with the long process of buying car tires. To meet this challenge, the company is deploying a new "Sam's Garage" application in the US in July that will turn what took half an hour into a 5-minute process, says the company.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon shared an amusing story about his Sam's Club tire purchase experience, which led to the creation of the new application.

"A few months ago, I crashed a nail and ruined a tire, so I asked Sam's Club for help. It was a Saturday and we were busy. At some point, I'm in third position with two members behind me. Our badociates work hard, but the process takes a lot of time, "said McMillon. "As we all wait in the Bentonville club, I can say that one of the members recognized me. He does not say anything – but he does not have to. His facial expression says it all: "What does it mean to queue, man? Surely you can do something about it, "he said.

He then suggested Sam's Club General Manager John Furner to rebadess the purchase of tires, and the application of the new Sam's Garage app is the result.

In general, the purchase of tires can be a longer process, which may even involve archaic systems such as paper catalogs. The same goes for Sam's Club, which according to McMillon relies on "multiple systems, paper catalogs and a large office" to serve tire shoppers.

Nine months after the CEO queued up, a new tire shopping app was designed to help Sam's Club members. The application, Sam's Garage, will work on mobile tablets and will scan the customer's membership card to extract the vehicles badociated with it. He then badists the Sam's Club partner in filtering possible tire options based on their conversation with the customer about their tire needs.

For example, you need to press buttons such as "responsiveness", "winter traction", "wet handling", "off-road", "driving comfort", etc.

As they progress, more and more filters appear, allowing the partner to limit tire options based on factors such as availability in store, special offers, brand, load index, speed, mileage guarantee and many other options. They can even make side-by-side comparisons of different factors.

They can then press a button to get a quote, send a quote or place an order.

"That's what it looks like to be a digital business. Sam's Garage will be rolled out across the country in July. From concept to design, its implementation will be completed in less than nine months starting this Saturday, the day of tire purchase, "said McMillon.
