SBoyd said: "When you reach my age, very little surprises you, but it is certainly the case and I am deeply honored and grateful to Her Majesty the Queen.

"Our primary goal in life is to help the less fortunate, and our country is full of very useful causes to which we can all contribute.

"It's a great honor and I feel like I'm sharing it with my family and Tunnock staff, so I'll just have to make sure I live long enough to get used to it."

Sir Boyd is also known for his charitable work and has long been supporting the RNLI and the Salvation Army, as well as the Malin Court Housing Association, which runs a home for the elderly in Turnberry, Ayrshire.

A spokesman for Tunnock said: "Everyone connected with the company is absolutely thrilled that Boyd Tunnock's contribution to our country has been recognized in this way."

David Mundell, the Scottish secretary, said that he "could not be happier" of the award and praised Sir Boyd's "enormous contribution" to the Scottish economy.

He said: "Its iconic Scottish products are not only appreciated by the Scots, they are also an international success." Throughout his long career, Sir Boyd has contributed immensely to Scottish life, without ever failing to defend Scotland. There can be no more worthy recipient of this honor. "
