MANCHESTER UNITED has proposed to Juan Mata a new contract to try to prevent him from leaving the club for Spain.

The existing Mata contract expires at the end of the month and he is able to go out to sign a free transfer to someone else.

But United confirmed he made an offer to the 31-year-old midfielder in the hope that he could play a major role in the new era of Ore Gunnar Solskjaer.

United boss Solskjaer has decided to release 15 players after the expiry of their contract, including Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia.

The promising young striker James Wilson is also on the starting list, as Solskjaer begins to empty the game and form his own group.

The decision to retain Mata therefore means that the Norwegian considers the game maker as a person who can play a crucial role in his development plans next season.

Although not always a starter, the former Chelsea star is still one of the club's most naturally gifted footballers.

He is also considered a professional model and has the kind of character that Solskjaer looks for in his locker room after finding players difficult to manage.

But there is no guarantee that the Spanish international will accept this offer, its services arousing much interest in Spain.

Barcelona has been courting him for a while, knowing that he would be a talented player without a transfer fee.

His salary demands would not make the bank jump either, which explains why the Spanish champions are amused and grant him a two-year contract.

Now, Mata must decide to stay in Manchester, where he has been happy and well settled, or to return to his home country.
