Finally it's here, the new Mac Pro. It took five and a half years for Apple to introduce the third generation of its high-end computer. It may be because Californians who love design have gone into a stalemate with the second generation. Due to the many users of its round "shit" design called Mac Pro 2013, it was pretty, but it was a thermal nightmare. The compact design was not designed for larger and heavier graphics cards that are standard today. Apple had to go back to a cuboid design. And as the retro chic is anyway, we remember the good old cheese grater. This was the nickname of the Power Mac G5 and the first generation of Mac Pro in 2006. Their perforated metal look has been modernized with a more complex pattern and, with a sturdy steel frame, forms the shell of the new Mac Pro.
Inside, Apple has done everything to eliminate the errors of the previous generation. A huge heatsink ensures that the processor does not have to be throttled even at full load, and with the new Mac Pro expansion module it is possible to install two graphics cards with a total of four GPUs. In addition, the graphics module is integrated with the cooling concept of the entire system and can therefore do without powerful fans. The GPU is AMD's new Radeon Pro Vega II, a powerful professional processor. With the Radeon Pro Vega II Duo, a two-chip card has been created. In addition to the normal PCIe port, a second connector provides faster transfer rates. Even with the processor, Apple has not saved, the 28-core chip comes from the Intel Xeon series and will be one of the most powerful processors on the market.
All this power is reflected in the price. While the Mac Pro currently available on the Apple home remains second generation based on equipment costs between 4599 and 7719 euros, the new model already suggests the lowest version with $ 5999 to reserve. The Euro-trip is not yet here, starting with Apple's usual price policy, but it should well exceed the 6000 mark for the entry-level model. The higher version should cost more than $ 45,000, according to the calculations of "The Verge". But you also get, for example, a terabyte and a half of RAM. For comparison: Today's gaming computers typically have 16 GB of RAM.
Not for consumers
This price also shows that the Mac Pro is not a product aimed at ordinary consumers. The integrated components are intended for servers and workstations, computers capable of performing demanding computer tasks over a long period without any problems. Apple also focuses on creative applications such as 3D modeling, video editing, or game design.
Questionable price
It is therefore logical that the new Mac Pro is accompanied by a suitable companion. The XDR Pro Display with a 10-bit color depth and a DCI-P3 color space puts the emphasis on professional editing of images and videos. The 32-inch screen with a resolution of 6K will cost $ 4999 and would reach, according to Apple, a constant luminance of 1,000 nits. Given the prices of comparable competitive products, pro-display is even relatively cheap.
The price of the stand available as an accessory is all the more surprising as it will cost $ 999. Already during the presentation, the audience voiced a distinct murmur on Twitter and other social media. Users also showed little understanding. Although screens of this clbad are usually mounted on existing media, the media still seems too expensive. It is also incomprehensible that the VESA mount, necessary to connect the screen with a stand, is not included in the price and does not cost very cheap at $ 199.
The new Mac Pro is an attractive device for large creative companies such as Pixar and a cheap buy for big wallets. In any case, Apple has a new Mac Pro in the wallet, which deserves this name.
