The presence of Aedes albopictus, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito, has been confirmed for the first time in dengue-affected areas in Dharan. Earlier reports had suggested that another type of mosquito – the female Aedes aegypti – was the sole cause of the spread of dengue fever in areas affected by the sub-metropolis crisis.
A team of health workers, including doctors and sub-city leaders involved in the "search and destroy" mosquito campaign, discovered hundreds of eggs, larvae and pupae in free water from a hotel in Bijayapur, Dharan-14.
Dip Kumar Sah, an official of the Center for Research and Training on Vector-borne Diseases at Hetauda, currently in the dengue-affected area to collect samples, confirmed that Aedes albopictus had also been found at Dharan. According to him, they had also discovered the same type of mosquito in Pokhara two months ago.
Aedes albopictus is a small, dark mosquito with a white dorsal band and banded legs. Health workers reported being active throughout the year in the tropics and subtropics.
At the same time, the metropolitan city of Dharan declared neighborhoods 8 and 15 as areas affected by the crisis after the health director of province 1 announced a dengue-related emergency in the city. Up to 188 people have been diagnosed with dengue fever in both neighborhoods since the beginning of the year. Most patients come from Room 15. Dengue patients are treated in a tropical room and emergency unit of the BP Health Institute Koirala.
