Strengthen the massive distribution of fertilizers to boost cocoa production

Accra, June 7, GNA – Professor Kwabena
Asomanin Anaman, lecturer in Political Economy at the University of Ghana,
urged the government to strengthen mbad spraying and fertilizer distribution
program to increase cocoa revenues.

He also called for a depoliticization of the
program and advocated for the registration of farmer groups as well as
groups such as women o increase productivity.

Prof Anaman said this when he introduced the
conclusions of a report on "farm prices and income of cocoa farmers" in
Accra on Friday.

The research conducted by Professor Anaman and funded
SEND Ghana, a civil society organization with the support of INKOTA netzwerk,
aimed to understand how producer prices have affected cocoa welfare
Farmers.

In introducing the report, he noted that
program had had a significant impact on cocoa production since its
introduction.

He added that the report also noted that
increase in the number of pesticide spraying and fertilizer distribution
beyond the average per farm per year, could stimulate further production and
alleviate the burden of farmers by creating wealth.

"Mbad spraying and fertilizers
distribution programs should be strengthened in terms of increasing the amount
and the quality of services, because the use of spraying and fertilizers has been demonstrated
increase gross revenue from cocoa, "he said.

"It should, however, be used responsibly in
in order not to have negative effects on biodiversity, soil and human health.

He deplored the lack of participation of
farmers in setting prices for cocoa production and
stakeholders to review the policies that governed the sector in order to
that farmers had substantial representation on the price review

Other recommendations included strengthening
monitoring and intelligence to significantly reduce fraud related to
balance adjustment by some purchasing clerks, publication of information
linked to the fixing of the annual price of the cocoa producer.

He also encouraged COCOBOD and others
agencies to ensure equitable distribution of resources and services for all
cocoa producers, regardless of their ethnic origin and political party
