Uber has denied reports of the involvement of one of his drivers in the abduction of two Canadian women in the Ashanti region.
It is believed that the name of the Uber driver was the one who took the Canadians home. He was therefore arrested by police for the abduction that took place on Tuesday, June 4 in Ahodwo, Kumasi Royal Club.
Reacting to this case, Francesca Uriri, head of communications at Uber West Africa, denied the accusations, saying the driver in question was not a suspect.
According to her, the driver has just been badisting the police in his investigations and has not been arrested as previously stated.
"The unfortunate incident in Kumasi is very unfortunate, anything of this nature is unfortunate. However, the police confirmed that the driver Uber in question was not a suspect and that his number was available online. This is not a thing I say, you can also dig and confirm. He is not a suspect, "she confirmed.
Women aged 19 and 20 who were kidnapped in front of a home were Youth Challenge International volunteers.
According to reports, the two men were bundled up in a vehicle around 8:20 pm when they left their apartment.
However, the Canadian Foreign Ministry says it has informed women's families and is working with security agencies to help the victims.
The country has recently been hit by kidnappings. The largest of these cases, that of the abduction of three girls in Takoradi, has still not been resolved. Police have been under pressure for months, media and activists have asked for the rescue of the three girls.
The abduction of Canadian girls brings to two the number of foreign nationals kidnapped in Kumasi this year. The first is an Indian, Umpakan Chodri, who was later rescued by police in Parkoso, in the municipality of Asokore-Mampong.
The kidnappers in this case claimed a ransom of US $ 500,000 after sending photos of the victim to his family, a weapon in his head.
