FUKUOKA, Japan (AP) – French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said the French government's priority as a shareholder in automaker Renault SA was to strengthen its alliance with Nissan.
The Mayor told reporters at a press conference Sunday after a meeting in Japan of the 20 largest economies that Renault's job protection, factories and technology were his main concern.
He said that consolidating the alliance with other automakers, such as Fiat-Chrysler, was a secondary issue, but that companies should make their decisions accordingly.
When asked, The Mayor said that he was not planning to meet Nissan General Manager Hiroto Saikawa.
Fiat Chrysler has suddenly withdrawn its merger offer with Renault this week after the French automaker has asked for more time to persuade Nissan to accept the plan.
