Land flights from regional airlines due to a navigation system problem

US regional airlines have canceled flights after receiving error messages from on-board navigation systems on some of their aircraft, the Federal Aviation Administration said Sunday.

Mesa Airlines, which serves American Airlines and United Airlines, as well as Endeavor Air, a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, the American subcontractor GoJet, PSA Airlines and SkyWest, belonging to American Airlines, are concerned by the problem.

These regional carriers canceled about 400 scheduled flights on Sunday, according to the FlightAware flight tracking website. A Delta spokeswoman said 80 of her regional flights had been canceled.

The systems in question are installed on certain CRJ regional jets manufactured by Bombardier of Canada. The manufacturer did not immediately return a request for comment. The FAA said the system was designed by Rockwell Collins, which United Technologies acquired last year. The company was not immediately available for comment.

"We are working to determine the cause of the problem, which could result from a software update of the navigation systems," the FAA said in a statement, encouraging travelers to check the status of their flights from airlines .
