The main makers of the Instagram app and Facebook's VR / AR efforts believe that breaking Facebook would not do much good.
Adam Mosseri, director of Instagram, and Andrew Bosworth, vice president of VR / AR, appeared Monday during a question-and-answer session at the Code Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, where they have discussed the hypothesis that their company could face regulatory pressure to be split into several smaller organizations.
"It's a terrible idea," said Mosseri. "If you try to solve problems such as electoral integrity, hate speech, it will be all the more difficult to protect people exponentially."
Mosseri, who has been working for the company since 2008, acknowledged that Facebook was slow to deal with platform issues. "We were very focused on the good," he said. "We were not focused enough on the bad ones. Social media is an excellent amplifier, whether it's a good or a bad problem. We must do more to nourish good and remedy evil. "
Bosworth also said that new versions of Facebook's video chat material, Portal, would arrive in the fall, although he did not specify the form factors that the new products would take. He also pointed out that Facebook had generated $ 5 million in content sales in the two weeks following the launch of Oculus Quest, which he called an encouraging sign.
