PARIS (Reuters) – Plans to merge carmakers Renault and Fiat Chrysler could resurface despite the failure of last week's negotiations, the French transport minister said Tuesday, joining a crowd of French officials in hopes of revive the agreement.
Asked about the end of the talks between the two companies, Elisabeth Borne said BFM TV: "I think it's not closed."
Borne's remarks follow similar remarks by French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire, who also said he felt a merger between French Renault and Italian-American Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) remains a "good opportunity".
French Budget Minister Gerald Darmanin also said last week that he hoped the door would not be closed on an agreement.
Last week, FCA has given up $ 35 billion in merger negotiations with Renault, the two companies accusing the French government.
France holds a 15% stake in Renault and the collapse of the talks deprived companies of the opportunity to create the world's third-largest carmaker with € 5 billion in promised annual synergies.
FCA and Renault are still looking for ways to revive their merger plan and get approval from Nissan, their alliance partner, Reuters told sources close to these companies.
