Amazon recalls heaters after overheating reports

Owners of some heaters sold by Amazon will need to find a replacement.

The e-commerce giant recalls around 377,000 1500 watt ceramic space heaters sold by AmazonBasics from October 2017 to March 2019. They were all sold under the private label AmazonBasics.

Amazon voluntarily instituted the recall after receiving 30 reports from users in the United States and Canada that units may overheat and not function properly, which could cause fires or sparks.

No fire damage or injuries caused by heaters has been reported.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission advises customers with one of the four recalled models to discontinue use, to cut off the plug to make it unusable and to request a refund. Amazon will also send emails to customers who have purchased one.

The products were sold between 25 and 35 US dollars and were imported by Amazon from a Chinese manufacturer.

An Amazon representative declined to comment further on Business Insider.

Amazon launched a similar recall in March 2018, when its customers reported 53 cases of overheating and ignition of AmazonBasics brand external power banks, in at least one case of chemical burn.
