The structure of the 1763 monument was built to commemorate the rebellion of 1763, also known as the "Great Rebellion", which took place in the Magdelenenburg plantation in Berbice, Region 6. The plantation was located on the Upper Canje River and was the property of Mrs. Vernesobre.

Cuffy is now a national hero in Guyana.
The anniversary of the Cuffy Rebellion, February 23, is the feast of the Republic in Guyana since 1970.
