President Akufo-Addo is making a working visit to five Caribbean countries from 11 to 201 June 2015 as part of the "Year of Return" promotion efforts.

A quote accompanying the award, read by President Granger, indicates that Guyana confers this honor on President Akufo-Addo "for his dedication and commitment to the Commonwealth, the African Union, ECOWAS and his steadfast support for human rights. developing States. "

The President of Guyana said: "President Akufo-Addo is recognized for his invaluable efforts in promoting economic security and stability on the African continent, for his unwavering dedication to regionalism and for his tireless efforts in favor of developing countries. "

He added that developing countries expected President Akufo-Addo to continue to show leadership and ensure the protection of his achievements and the protection of his future.

"I congratulate President Akufo-Addo for his inauguration and thank him for his leadership in his own country and for his leadership in developing countries and, in particular, in the interest of small African countries, from Asia and the Caribbean "he added.

President Akufo-Addo, as part of his one-day visit to this Caribbean country, held bilateral talks with his Guyanese counterpart.

He also laid a wreath at the 1763 monument built to commemorate the "Great Rebellion" of 1763, which took place in the Magdelenenburg plantation in Berbice, Region 6. The plantation was located on the Canje River and belonged to a woman, Mrs. Vernesobre.

On February 23, 1763, the uprising, considered the first real attempt by slaves to fight for their freedom in an organized manner, began.

During the revolt, a domestic slave named Cuffy, also called "Kofi", from Lilienburg Plantation, quickly played a leading role in the rebellion and organized a number of riots against the plantation owners. The uprising lasted more than a year before the Dutch could defeat the slaves.

Cuffy is now a national hero in Guyana. The anniversary of the Cuffy Rebellion, February 23, is the feast of the Republic in Guyana since 1970.

The President's visit to the Caribbean would take him to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.
