The man becomes a school director in which he once worked as a cleaner ▷ Ghana News

With a mixture of determination and support, a man who worked as a janitor in different schools rose through the ranks to become the new manager of a school that he had used to clean up.

Denver Public Schools caretaker Michael Atkins has gone from caretaker to his new role as director. Part of his success can be attributed to the way he approached his first full-time cleaning schools.

Michael revealed that "I'm proud of the bathrooms I cleaned, I'm proud of the rooms I cleaned."

He attributes his transition from cleaning corridors to teaching, to his second year teacher that he met on the job.

Michael explains that the teacher helped establish a special relationship with him at the age of seven and helped him find a job in the clbadroom as a paraprofessional teacher.

He applied the same pride as his job as guardian to his new role, which allowed him to climb the ladder.

From first guardian, teacher, badistant director, he became the new director of the Stedman Elementary School, a school in which he grew up.

Michael revealed that when he was a child, he recognized that black students were treated differently.

"Just the different interactions that I had with teachers, I had the social intelligence of the time to understand that there were differences," Atkins said.

He hopes to help correct the racial disparities he has experienced in his childhood.

"So, what I want for my brown, black or white students is to live the diversity at a high level" he said.

With his hands-on experience, Atkins has grown with his unique perspective as a caretaker and is perfectly positioned to help them achieve this.
