The singer of a 70s English prog band expressed surprise after Kanye West and Tyler the Creator propelled his song to the top of the US charts.
Tyler, a hip-hop mega star, rises to the top of the Billboard Chart with her debut album, Igor, and her single Puppet, alongside Kanye West, who has a veteran vocalist prog.
Mick Ware was the lead singer of Czar, who released a single called Today in the 1970s.
He expressed surprise when he was contacted by Sony, who wanted rappers to listen to the melody and thought it was a "scam".
After originally baduming that it was a hoax, Mick described the moment when he suddenly realized that one of the biggest hip-hop bands in the world wanted use his song.
Addressing Chris Hawkins on BBC 6 Music, Mick said: "Everything is done by email.
"The first email we received was sent to us by an entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles informing us that one of their artists wanted to taste Today.
"We just thought it was a scam."
Mick admitted he was a bit late on the hip-hop scene, saying, "This was the first time we were running Tyler the Creator and we could not believe how good he was in America.
"Kanye West is the other composer of this issue, so it was a very exciting email for us. We can only hope that this figure will be very successful. "
Mick was delighted to learn that Tyler and Kanye had remained true to his original, especially with regards to singing.
He continued: "In this unique issue [Puppet] there are a lot of harmonies in the same part of the sample and this corresponds to what we did before, namely a lot of harmonies.
"This is the only number I wrote on the record and sung."
Mick revealed that there was a rock kingship in his presence when Today came to life: "Bill Wyman was in the studio when we recorded him."
The fact that he has been supported by two of the world's largest groups to date will undoubtedly prompt Mick to raise the glbad in their direction.
