Crude oil futures rose more than 4% after two tankers attacked the Gulf of Oman, a key waterway used to transport energy supplies to the Middle East.
The Japanese owner of Kokuka Courageous told CNN that the 27,000-ton tanker had been attacked "by some kind of shell" off Fujairah, a port of the United Arab Emirates. The ship suffered damage to her starboard hull.
The ship's operator, BSM Ship Management, based in Singapore, said in a statement that the Kokuka Courageous was about 14 nautical miles off the Iranian coast.
A second oil tanker, the Altair Front, was also attacked while sailing between the UAE and Iran, the Norwegian Maritime Agency said in a statement.
