The US State Department on Wednesday appointed African expert Donald Booth as special envoy to Sudan, in hopes that it could contribute to the definition of a "peaceful political solution" "between military leaders and groups in search of a civil regime.
The appointment came nine days after government troops and paramilitaries cracked down on protesters in front of the army headquarters in Khartoum, killing more than 110 people and injuring several hundred people.
Booth, 65, knows the country well, having been the Obama administration's special envoy to Sudan and South Sudan for the 2013-2017 period.
Morgan Ortagus, spokesman for the state department, said that Booth was already at work and that he was going to Sudan with Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Tibor Nagy, "so to dialogue with the parties ".
