Berlin:

An unexploded US air bomb dating back to World War II was discovered Friday in central Berlin during construction work, forcing the evacuation of blocks from the surrounding city, police said.

The explosive 100 kilograms has been unearthed on a construction site adjacent to the Alexa shopping center and near a railway track at the central transport hub of Alexanderplatz, in the city center. is from the city.

People were evacuated within 300 meters of the corroded bomb, which had an intact detonator, police said.

A police demining team was created to try to defuse the bomb later in the day, police said on Twitter, warning that the surrounding areas would remain blocked.

Nearly 75 years after the end of the Second World War, Germany remains littered with unexploded ordnance, a legacy of the Allies' intense bombing campaign against Nazi Germany.

At the largest post-war evacuation to date, some 60,000 Frankfurt residents were evacuated in 2017 so that an unexploded British bomb of 1.8 ton dubbed "blockbuster" could be defused.

Berlin suffered an intense bombing campaign during the war, especially in the spring of 1945. One-third of the houses in the city were destroyed and tens of thousands were killed.

Thousands of unexploded objects have since been discovered, but about 3,000 would still be buried in the basement of the city, according to experts.

In April 2018, the Berlin police defused a 500 kilogram British bomb, forcing the evacuation of 10,000 people.
