The alleged kidnappers
The Accra High Court has detained six suspects on suspicion of participating in the kidnapping of two Canadian women in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti region.
The six suspects must reappear in court on July 1, 2019.
Among the six people who appeared before the court today were the three Nigerian nationals initially apprehended. Sampson Aghalor, Elvis Ojiyorwe and Jeff Omarsar, and three Ghanaians, Yussif Yakubu, Abdul Nasir and Seidu Abubakari, also known as MBA.
They were charged with conspiracy for kidnapping and kidnapping.
The prosecution asked the court to remand the suspects on remand, as the police were still investigating the case and would need time to complete it.
During the court proceedings, it appeared that the kidnappers had claimed $ 800,000 ransom from the women's family.
According to the facts of the case, Sampson Aghalor saw March as the day a Nigerian met Yussif Yakubu, a Ghanaian, who later became a friend. In one of their conversations about how to make money, people talked about kidnapping as an option they then agreed to make.
Sampson Aghaloris would then have helped Yussif Yakubu buy a pistol for the crime. He also reportedly went to Nigeria to recruit two more people, Elvis Ojiyorwe and Jeff Omarsar.
The four then discussed how to make their plan a reality. According to the prosecution, they rented a Toyota Corolla at the price of four hundred Cedis.
Later in the evening, the four people searched the streets and met the two Canadian women, Lauren Patricia Catherine Tilley, 19, and Bailey Jordan Chitty, 20, who were in Kumasi on a school placement and worked with Youth Challenge International, a non-profit organization based in Toronto.
The two girls were then approached by the four people in front of their hostel and abducted. They were sent to an unfinished building in Kenyasi Krobo where they were kept.
The four accused also allegedly spilled blood on the victims and on the ground, took pictures and pbaded them on to their families.
The leader of the gang, Sampson Aghalor, then contacted the families of the two girls to claim eight hundred thousand dollars in ransom.
On 11 June, national security, relying on intelligence gathered, went to the hideout of the kidnappers to rescue the girls.
The prosecution said that during his rescue, the kidnappers exchanged fire with the security personnel and threatened to kill the girls if they did not withdraw. After several hours, the four people were arrested.
They would then have mentioned the names of Abdul Nasir and Seidu Abubakari as part of the plot.
The case was sent back to July 1st.
