Two British patients die after eating hospital foods

LONDON: Two Britons died from food poisoning after eating sandwiches and pre-packaged salads, British health authorities said Friday during a listeriosis outbreak that has already killed three people in British hospitals.

Patients have died of listeriosis, a rare bacterial infection that is particularly dangerous for people with weakened immune systems or for pregnant women.

Listeria bacteria is found primarily in dairy products and refrigerated ready-to-eat foods, according to the UK's National Health Service (NHS).

The products provided by The Good Food Chain would be at the origin of the infection. Since then, the sandwiches and salads concerned have been removed from hospitals.

"So far, no patient has been involved in this incident outside of health care organizations, but we continue to investigate," said Nick Phin, deputy head of the National Infection Service.

"Quick steps have been taken to protect patients and any risk to the public is low."

The Good Food Chain provides 43 NHS trusts, which often include several hospitals, throughout Great Britain.

The chain was stocked with meat produced by North Country Cooked Meats, which subsequently tested positive for the epidemic strain of listeria.
