Parliament strengthens security after suicide attempt

Parliament claims to have taken great care to properly secure its surroundings in order to avoid any incident.

The badurance of the legislature comes hours after the suicide attempt of a man in his thirties in the public gallery, Thursday, June 13.

In a press release, Kate Addo, Acting Director of Public Affairs of Parliament, explained that Kojo Mensah had come to the House and said he wanted a hearing with his representative, MP for Kwesimim.

"As usual, he pbaded the security checks and found no weapons or harmful material. In addition, he was properly dressed, in accordance with the rules of public participation in the House, "she said.

According to her, there was no reason to suspect that it posed a threat to himself or to any other person on the premises.

She stated that Mr. Mensah had been admitted to the rostrum of the Chamber and had conducted himself fairly well until he pulled a bandage and attempted to strangle him.

"Security in Parliament acted on time and avoided what would have been a fatal incident if it had succeeded. Mr. Mensah was escorted out of the room and handed over to the police for his own safety and that of the general public, "she said.

Parliament consciously maintains a high security presence to ensure the safety of Members and its staff, as well as the general public.

The legislature has also warned citizens that, as long as they are invited to observe the proceedings in the public gallery, they should abide by the rules of the House.
