The next Chelsea manager: a former director explains what makes Frank Lampard the ideal candidate

Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has lent his support to club legend Frank Lampard, who returns to Stamford Bridge as manager of the Blues.

The former midfielder is expected to replace Maurizio Sarri in the dugout, the latter being about to return to his home country to take over the Italian giant Juventus.

Lampard has been in management for only one season, coaching Derby County to the championship playoff final in his first incursion in the role and gaining praise in the match's turn, despite the fall of the last hurdle to bring the club back in the Premier League.

Some Chelsea fans are slightly worried about the 40-year-old's lack of leadership experience, but Di Matteo, who led Chelsea to his Champions League win in 2012, insists that the name Lampard would be a good thing.

"He's really the man he needs. It has personality," said former Blues boss at the Costa Smeralda Invitational (reported by Goal).

"I followed Derby last year and his team plays a very good football. It has all the experience of the world.

"It's an ideal choice. Whether for the moment or not, only time can tell.

"You can say it's too early but you have to give people a chance.

"Frank has all the tools and I think he will make many people happy when he was the next manager."

The current manager of Chelsea, Maurizio Sarri, has been under fire for some time, despite his victory in the Europa League, his third place in the Premier League and his qualification for the final of the Coupe de la Ligue. However, inconsistent performances have given rise to much criticism, with many Chelsea fans happy to see the Italian go to new pastures, and Di Matteo is not surprised to see him evolve.

"That's what the industry looks like," he added.

"People are moving all the time, I do not know exactly what the details are, but it looks like he wants to go back to Italy and he has probably received an interesting offer from Juventus – one of the biggest clubs of Italy and Europe.

"But Chelsea will find a suitable manager to lead the team."
