Immigration and US Customs enforcement (ICE) have reported a dramatic increase in the number of immigrants exposed to highly contagious viral infections. According to CNN, ICE has put 5,200 immigrants in quarantine due to exposure to mumps or chicken pox after confirmed cases of the disease were reported in 39 different migrant detention centers.
according to The hillICE said 4,276 immigrant detainees had been quarantined as a result of mumps exposure, while another 825 were quarantined due to their exposure to chicken pox. At least 99 immigrant detainees have been exposed to both viral infections. Bustle has contacted ICE for a comment.
According to CNN, blood tests confirmed that mumps was contaminated by 297 people held throughout the country between September 2018 and June 13. Although the agency has witnessed cases of contagious diseases such as influenza, measles, and even chicken pox, September ICE was reported to have registered for the first time confirmed cases of mumps in its shelters. The initial source of the disease and its mode of spread remain unknown, reported the cable news network.
In a statement to CNN, an ICE official said that exposures and subsequent quarantine would have a number of consequences for inmates.
