Chikungunya was diagnosed in three Icelandic holidaymakers after returning from the Costa Blanca to their home country. This is the first recorded case of a person who contracts the disease in Spain.
Officials from the Spanish Ministry of Health in the Valencia region confirmed that the tourists had been diagnosed in a hospital in Reykjavik. They were staying in the province of Alicante.
The first person to be diagnosed was a 37-year-old woman. The doctors later confirmed that his sister and five-year-old son also had the disease.
Since then, the Generalitat de Valencia has activated the control measures of the disease. Officials went to hospitals in the province of Alicante to check if other people had contracted the disease. Researchers from the Universities of Alicante and Valencia also need to collect samples to study.
Chikungunya is transmitted by most symptoms and symptoms include a feverish sensation, joint pain and rashes that usually develop about 12 days after exposure.
The disease kills about one in 1,000 people who contract it. The symptoms usually go away after a week, but the disease can sometimes lead to long-term joint complications.
