A woman drowned in Lake Geneva when her boat sank under a severe storm that hit parts of Switzerland on Saturday, police said.

A man who was in the same boat was able to swim to another boat from where he fired "two fires," said Joanna Matta, police spokesman for the (area) canton of Geneva.

The man told the police that the woman was "crossing Geneva" and that the storm had taken them "by surprise," Matta said.

Three police boats and emergency services rushed to the scene. The police divers then recovered the woman's body from the lake.

The victim, whose nationality remains unknown, was then taken to a Geneva hospital where she was pronounced dead.

In the neighboring French region of Haute-Savoie, the storm also caused damage and left a 51-year-old German tourist dead following the fall of a tree on a campsite.

During another incident on Lake Geneva, the storm also damaged some of the 465 boats participating in the 81st edition of the Bol d'Or, an annual regatta, announced the press service of the event.

Heavy rains and strong winds shook the participants on Saturday afternoon, causing boats to capsize while no one was injured.

However, the storm broke the mast of the super-fast "Real Team" catamaran, which was in the lead and was forced to withdraw from the race.

Bad weather hit western Switzerland on Saturday afternoon, bringing hail and winds reaching 110 kilometers by the hour, according to weather forecaster MeteoSwiss.
